The week before your home goes on the market is a good time to slow down and check the small things. Most of them take an hour or less.
Walk through like a visitor
Start at the street and walk to your front door. Look at the path, the porch light and the doorbell. Then go room by room. Note anything that sticks, squeaks, drips or flickers. Fix what you can, and write down what you cannot.
Clear the extra
Pack away things you do not use every day. Clear the counters and the tops of dressers. Open closets so visitors can see the space. Boxes in the garage are fine, as long as they are stacked neatly.
Clean the details
Wash the windows if you can. Wipe switch plates and door handles. Check that every light bulb works and that the bulbs match in each room. A clean, bright house is easy to look at in photos too.
Plan for showings
Decide where pets will go when visitors come. Pick a spot for your keys, your mail and your bags. Ask your agent how much notice you will get before a showing, and what you should do with the lights and the doors.
Gather your papers
Put the paperwork for the home in one folder. That can include manuals, receipts for repairs and any notes about the home. Your agent can tell you what else to bring to the first meeting.
